He first won the election for president of the steelworkers union of So Bernardo do Campo and Diadema in 1975. Then he went on to win the position again in 1978. There are many reasons behind it.
So Bernardo do Campo and Diadema are located in the ABCD region. This region is the hub of many of Brazil’s automobile companies—such as Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, and many more. These cities are among the most industrialized in Brazil due to their location in the region.
Lula da Silva became a main and active leader in the organization of union activities and major strikes in the country during the late 1970s. At that time Brazil was under military rule. The labor courts decided that the strikes were unlawful. Lula da Silva was sentenced to one month in jail.
Lula da Silva engaged in politics during the 1980s when he with many intellectuals and union leaders founded the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). This was known as the workers’ Party—a left-wing party.
He started to lead national efforts in favor of direct elections for the president. He organized and mobilized people against military rule in Brazil. In 2986 he was elected to the national Chamber of Deputies.
He was the Workers’ Party’s presidential candidate in 1989. He lost to Fernando Collor de Mello. However, he continued contesting the presidential elections of 1994 and 1998 but got defeated by his rival. In 2003 he was elected president of the country.
Corruption Charges and Rose to Power
Lula faced corruption charges in 2017 in five separate cases. In February 2017, his wife died of a stroke. He had been sentenced to nine years and six months in prison after being found guilty of corruption and money-laundering charges.
The Supreme Court ordered Lula da Silva’s release in 2019. A single Supreme Court judge Edson Fachin annulled Lula da Silva’s conviction and cleared the way for him to contest in the 2022 elections. He contested the presidential election and has secured a return to power. He called for ‘Peace and unity’ after a bitter electoral campaign.
