Attorney Haben Girma was born in Oakland, California, on 29th July 1988. Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa was the hometown of her father, Girma Kidane Adgoy. During the Eritrean War of Independence and the Ethiopian Civil War in 1983, her mother Saba Gebrevesus, and many other Ethiopian and Eritrean refugees escaped to Sudan.
In California, Saba Gebrevesus met Girma Kidane. Tigrinya, Amharic, and English are the three languages that Haben Girma’s parents are conversant in. Mussie Gebre, six years older and likewise born deaf-blind in Eritrea, is Girma’s brother.

Haben Girma Career
As a Skadden Fellow, Girma began to work at Disability Rights Advocates (DRA) in Berkeley, California, in 2013. She worked there as a staff attorney to represent those with impairments from 2015 to 2016.
